…doesn’t that sound like the ultimate Presidential ticket? Granted, neither man is an American citizen, and the election is in ’08, but damn, that would be swell.

I had the pleasure of seeing Ricky Gervais, creator of “The Office” and “Extras” not to mention the greatest podcast of all time, perform live at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, as part of a festival curated by the Great White Duke himself, David Bowie.

Ziggy Stardust himself came onstage at the beginning of the night, dressed in tux and tails to introduce Gervais, singing a few bars from the cameo he made on “Extras” with lines such as “Fatso takes his own life / He blows his bloated face off…” all in good, dry English fun. But I mean, c’mon I was merely a few hundred feet away from pretty much the greatest rocker of all time!!  AMAZING.

Then Gervais came on. And he was brilliant. His style is casual and conversational, you really don’t get the feeling he’s performing, he’s just sharing some incredibly hilarious stories (most of them involving an AIDS pamphlet he came across in the early 90s, as well as the British media’s reaction to his weight) while sitting around having a pint.

He performed for about an hour and a half and we were all terribly sad to see him go at the night’s end. But having seen both (as RG put it) “Hunky Dory and Chunky Dory” share the stage for a night was one to remember.
