Last night I had the huge pleasure of seeing “New Zealand’s 4th most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo” FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS perform at the Gramercy.

These guys are simply (and I don’t toss the word around) genius.

Jermaine (on the left) and Bret are just two dudes with some sweet guitar licks and a never-before-seen gift for clever lyrics and banter. They are so utterly at ease with each other and during performance, it feels like you may just be watching two guys you went to college with goofing around at a party. But could mere mortals come up with such incredible songs as “She’s So Hot”

Oh my god, she’s so hot
She’s so fucking hot, she’s like a curry
I gotta tell her how hot she is
But if I tell her how hot she is she’ll think I’m being sexist
She’s so hot, she’s making me sexist…bitch

Apparently Bret was also a girly-looking elf in the Lord of the Rings movies (thanks for that factoid, IMDB!). That just cracks me up. But seriously, I can’t explain in mere words how fantastically funny FOTC are.

Their new show debuts on HBO this Sunday, and you bet I’ll be watching. Rhys Darby, who is on the show with them, was the opening act, and he too was incredible. His gift is for sound effects, which he does dazzlingly. He’s even better than that crazy guy from the Police Academy films, which is the highest compliment I can give someone whose thing is sound effects!

If you still don’t believe me…what the heck? You should believe me. Or see it for yourself.
